Opportunities in the circular economy: A primer for Australian directors

An introduction to circular economy practices and business models for Australian boards

The circular economy provides Australian organisations with a practical framework to support net zero goals, restore natural systems, and explore new business opportunities.

Its principles extend beyond waste reduction, offering a strategic pathway to long-term resilience, resource efficiency, and competitive advantage.

With a circularity rate of four per cent – half the global average – Australia aims to double this by 2035, focusing on high-impact sectors such as the built environment, agriculture, industry, and resources.

This primer introduces directors to circular economy concepts, covering the value chain, business models, and steps for boards. It also examines the Australian context, including links to mandatory climate disclosures and practical challenges of transitioning to circular systems.

As host of the Climate Governance Initiative (CGI) Australia, the AICD is pleased to have collaborated with Accenture to produce this resource. Adapted for Australian directors, it builds on a guide developed in partnership with the World Economic Forum (WEF).
