On 4 October 2019, the AICD provided a submission to the Legislative Standing Committee on Social Issues in relation to the parliamentary inquiry into the Modern Slavery Act 2018 (NSW).
While the AICD supports the introduction of legislation as a means of combatting modern slavery in Australia or by Australian businesses, we do not support duplicative requirements at the State and Commonwealth levels. The national level is the appropriate jurisdiction in which to undertake action against modern slavery, through the recently introduced Commonwealth Modern Slavery Act 2018 (Cth) and for this reason the AICD is of view that the NSW Modern Slavery Act is unnecessary.
