Directors on US Election: survey results

Thursday, 24 October 2024

A recent survey conducted by the Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD) shows a majority of directors believe a Harris presidency would be more beneficial for US-Australia relations.

The national survey of more than 1300 company directors posed two questions related to the upcoming US Presidential Election, with both receiving an overwhelming response in favour of a Harris rather than a Trump presidency.

Just over 60% of those surveyed believed Kamala Harris would be a better economic manager and nearly 70% believed a Harris administration would be better for Australia’s relationship with the United States.

The survey posed the following questions:

  • In your opinion, would a Harris or Trump presidency be better for the US economy?
    • Harris 60.4%
    • Trump 18.1%
  • Do you think a Harris or Trump presidency would be better for Australia’s relationship with the US?
    • Harris 69.4%
    • Trump 10.5%

AICD Managing Director and CEO Mark Rigotti said the results of the survey were very interesting and revealed a different inclination coming from the Australian perspective.

“These results contrast to much of the most recent polling in the United States, which shows marginally more people believe Donald Trump would be better for the US economy.”

The economy has come to the fore as the single most important issue for Americans in a presidential election for the first time since the global financial crisis of 2008.

The latest Gallup poll showed 52% believed the economy was the top issue, with 54% saying Donald Trump would be the better economic manager, to Kamala Harris 45%.
