The Board’s Role in Cyber

Are you confident to lead and support cybersecurity risk governance policies?

ABOUT THE COURSE

Are you and your organisation cyber ready?

Would you add value when responding to a cyber crisis? This illuminating four-week online course will help experienced board directors gain the knowledge and confidence to assist in preparing a robust strategy to manage a cyber threat effectively.

To take this course, prior governance knowledge is essential. You must either be a current practising director with at least three years’ experience or have attended one of the following courses:

  • Governance for Directors
  • Strategy and Risk for Directors
  • Foundations of Directorship program
  • Governance Foundations for Not-for-Profit Directors program
  • Company Directors Course
  • Or any courses at the strengthening level or above

You will also need a minimum of 4mbp internet, a webcam, a microphone and a quiet place when attending the virtual classrooms.

This course will strengthen your understanding of the cybersecurity landscape, so you can contribute to setting policies that align with technological approaches to managing risk.

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Determine the board’s role in cyber governance and building a healthy cyber-resilient culture.
  • Examine the cyber landscape and recognise current and emerging cyber threats and opportunities.
  • Demonstrate how cyber-focused risk frameworks can be used to develop and manage cyber enterprise risk.
  • Examine ways of developing, measuring and aligning an effective cyber strategy to the organisation’s governance framework.
  • Identify how cyber incident preparedness aligns with the cyber strategy and how to develop organisational cyber resilience.
  • Investigate cyber response and crisis management strategies, principles and notifications.

This course is delivered online over four weeks to a cohort of between 12 (minimum) and 30 (maximum) people.

All course material is presented online. There are no hard copy notes for this course.

The online coursework is comprised of six interactive topics. At the end of each topic, there is a short scenario to check your understanding of the key concepts presented.

There are also 13 director tools available as further resources to support your learning.

You will be required to spend at least 1.5 to 2 hours per week completing materials and participating in course activities.

During weeks 2 and 4 of the course, you are required to attend a 1-hour virtual classroom on Zoom, where an AICD tutor leads the discussion-based session.

You can also access tutor- and participant-led online discussion forums via MyLearning at any time.

Each week, tutors post discussion questions to encourage you to challenge your thinking, reflect on the topic, and explore content more deeply through peer-to-peer conversations. (The tutor also monitors the forum.)

At the end of the course, you gain 10 DPD units and a Statement of Attendance.
