Board diversity statistics

At the Australian Institute of Company Directors we believe that we have a leadership role to play to improve board gender diversity, both at home and internationally.

We collect the latest statistics, interviews, opinion pieces and case studies from individuals and companies that are on the path to increasing the gender diversity of their boardrooms and executive pipelines. 


Women on ASX 200 Boards* (at 30 November 2021)

  • The latest percentage of women on ASX 200 boards is 34.2%
  • Women comprised 41.8% of new appointments to ASX 200 boards
  • There are no boards in the ASX 200 without women

Female appointments to ASX 200 boards (appointment rate) 

  • Women have comprised 41.8% of 2021 appointments to ASX 200 boards as of November 2021
  • Women comprised 42.6% of new appointments to ASX 200 boards in 2020
  • Women comprised 39.7% of new appointments to ASX 200 boards in 2019.
  • Women comprised 45.4% of new appointments to ASX 200 boards in 2018
  • Women comprised 35% of new appointments to ASX 200 boards in 2017
  • Women comprised 44% of new appointments to ASX 200 boards in 2016
  • Women comprised 34% of new appointments to ASX 200 boards in 2015
  • Women comprised 30% of new appointments to ASX 200 boards in 2014
  • Women comprised 22% of new appointments to ASX 200 boards in 2013
  • Women comprised 22% of new appointments to ASX 200 boards in 2012
  • Women comprised 28% of all new appointments to ASX 200 boards in 2011, compared to 25% in 2010 and only 5% in 2009 and 8% in 2008

Number of women appointed to ASX 200 boards

77 women have been appointed to ASX 200 boards at 30 November 2021. 

  • 75 women were appointed to ASX 200 boards in 2020.
  • 69 women were appointed to ASX 200 boards in 2019.
  • 100 women were appointed to ASX 200 boards in 2018.
  • 60 women were appointed to ASX 200 boards in 2017.
  • 79 women were appointed to ASX 200 boards in 2016.
  • 66 women were appointed to ASX 200 boards in 2015.
  • 53 women were appointed to ASX 200 boards in 2014.
  • 37 women were appointed to ASX 200 boards in 2013.
  • 41 women were appointed to ASX 200 boards in 2012.
  • 68 women were appointed to ASX 200 boards in 2011.
  • 56 women were appointed to ASX 200 boards in 2010, a substantial increase on 2009 (10 women appointed).

Women on ASX 300 Boards (at 30 November 2021)

  • The latest percentage of women on ASX 300 boards is 32.6%  
  • Women comprised 44.6% of new appointments to ASX 300 boards
  • A total of 8 boards in the ASX 300 do not have any women

Women on ASX All Ordinaries boards (at 30 November 2021)

  • The latest percentage of women on ASX All Ordinaries is 28.7%
  • Women comprised 44.8% of new appointments to the All Ords
  • A total of 67 boards in the All Ords still do not have any women

The constituents of the ASX 200 & ASX 300 are based on the September 2021 Quarterly Rebalance of the S&P/ASX Indices. ASX All Ords are based on the March 2021 Quarterly Rebalance of the S&P/ASX Indices.
