David Shortland is a director and board advisor with around 30 years of experience across a number of disciplines. He has had director, executive and advisory roles in sectors including financial services, transport, infrastructure, and health. He is especially interested in how Boards and governing bodies generally strive for higher performance and what composition, skills and behaviours enable this. He relishes supporting Directors and Executives as they work to be even better in the execution of their vital roles and responsibilities.
In partnership with other governance experts and board advisory groups including Hattonneale, Governance for Good and AICD, Shortland Consulting conducts Board Review & Evaluation conversations and interviews with Chairs, Directors and Executives across a variety of sectors. He was also a guest lecturer at the University of Sydney Business School to graduate students on topics such as business ethics and corporate responsibility.
David’s keen interest in international contemporary governance started through his several roles at the Australian Securities Exchange (‘ASX’). There he supported the expert team that culminated in him facilitating the final consultations leading to the publication of the 1st Edition of the ASX Corporate Governance Council Principles & Recommendations. David was also a co-author of AICD's first edition of Good Governance Principles and Guidance for Not-For-Profit Organisations. Amongst other AICD programs, he is also accredited to deliver a number of days of the flagship AICD Company Directors Course including the Board Effectiveness, Risk & Strategy, Legal Environment elements.
David sits on the Board of ChildFund Australia. For the last 5 years he has also served on the ChildFund Alliance board, that comprises 11 global child-focused development and humanitarian organisations working with 36 million children, their families and communities, in 70 countries. David was also a non-executive director of the National Heart Foundation (NSW) Board for 4 years and served on the national Audit & Governance Committee.
