John M. Green is a leading company director, philanthropist and author. His previous careers were in investment banking (as an executive director at Macquarie) and, before that, in law (as a partner in predecessor firms of Ashurst and Herbert Smith Freehills). Until recently, he was also a book publisher (as co-founder of Pantera Press).
He left his day job as an investment banker two years before the global financial crisis – enough of a lag so no one could accuse him of starting the whole mess! He wrote his first novel about it. He’s since written five more thrillers and he’s now working on his seventh, a crime thriller about AI.
Currently, he’s the first Independent Chair of PwC Australia’s Governance Board, the Chair of University of Wollongong Global Enterprises (operating offshore campuses in Dubai, Malaysia, Hong Kong and India), a director of financial services group Challenger as well as the Cyber-Security Cooperative Research Centre.
Previously, John was a director of global professional engineering services group Worley (where he was the initial Chair) and QBE Insurance Group (where he was Deputy Chair). He’s been a Council Member of the National Library of Australia, and a member of the Takeovers Panel. He’s also been a member of the AICD’s Corporate Governance Committee and its APRA Forum.
His philanthropy focuses on literacy, education and the arts, and he’s also served on the boards of several not-for-profits.
John is also an aficionado of magic and mentalism. He lives in Sydney with his wife, the sculptor Jenny Green.
