Gillian has had an extensive career providing leadership in the human services sector across government and non-government roles. During her membership of the Board of Life Without Barriers she has been instrumental in reshaping how the Board stewards its practice, leading to a new Care Governance approach to Boards that care for vulnerable people.
Gillian was the first Children’s Commissioner in Australia. As New South Wales Commissioner for Children and Young People from 1999-2009. she established the Commission as one of Australia’s leading children’s policy and research centres.
Gillian has been responsible for coordinating whole of government action to refocus attention on early-childhood development in care and worked to break the silence around child sexual assault through the NSW Child Protection Council.
Gillian started her career as a family therapist with troubled children, underpinning her lifelong commitment to children and their wellbeing.
In recognition of her passion and determination to change lives for the better, in 2009, Gillian was awarded the Officer of the Order of Australia for her service to the community as a leading advocate in the protection of the rights and welfare of children and youth. Gillian has hands-on knowledge and experience in the child protection space.
